Sushi Restaurant Rumored Next to Funcho's in Westhampton Beach

Construction fencing and posted permits have gone up beside Funcho's, and local word is that an upscale sushi restaurant is on the way, possibly opening this spring.

I was driving through Westhampton Beach today and had to pull over. Orange construction fencing is wrapped around the new building right next to Funcho's and Mixology, with permits taped up in the windows. My first thought was "finally, something is happening there." My second thought, once I heard what it might be, was a lot more excited than that.

What we are hearing

Word around town is that we are getting a high end sushi restaurant. I am getting this from Dawn Watson (@DawnWatsonhamptons), a local real estate agent, who heard it from Will Shapiro, a local attorney, so take it as pretty solid local chatter rather than a press release. Not another casual spot. An actual upscale sushi place, right in the middle of Westhampton Beach.

Why I am excited

I will be honest, I am thrilled. I only really got into sushi about two years ago, and once it clicked for me, it clicked hard. I am one of those people now who will drive a little further out of my way for a good roll, so a legit sushi spot opening five minutes from home is exactly the kind of local news I live for.

Funny side note: the building next door has that old staircase on the side. A couple of friends and I snuck up it once or twice back in high school to get onto the roof, so seeing the fencing go up right there gave me a little flashback.

What happens next

It is still early stage. The fencing is up, permits are posted, nothing is open, but it is clearly moving. If I had to guess based on how things look, I would bet on a spring opening. There is no official word on a name or an exact date yet, and since the details are secondhand, treat all of it as unconfirmed until the owners say otherwise.

I will keep an eye on it and update this as I hear more. For now, if you are a sushi person like me, keep this one on your radar. Westhampton Beach is about to get a lot more interesting right next to Funcho's.
